Multimethod valuation of peatland ecosystem services: Combining choice experiment, multicriteria decision analysis and deliberative valuation

• People placed little value on energy peat, biodiversity was regarded as the most important ecosystem service. Carbon storage a difficult concept for discrete choice experiment respondents. Participatory multi-criteria decision analysis helpful in structuring analysis. Deliberative valuation contributed to leaning services. Full integration between methods based different understanding of rationality is problematic. This paper presents multi-method study using experiment, participatory and deliberative citizens’ panels evaluate peatland services southern Finland. All three studies addressed same scenarios drew biophysical assessment data facilitate comparison processes well results. The results indicate that people place high regulating cultural services, especially biodiversity, less peat. experiences sustain argument learning rarely have ordered set preferences unfamiliar objects like They also illustrate scope citizen consumer support assumptions may change result well-informed group deliberation.
